POLLOCKSVILLE, NC (WCTI) — Turning 100 is a big achievement. Turning 107 is even bigger.
Harvey Lee Futrell Sr. celebrated his 107th birthday Thursday at Brook Stone Living Center in Pollocksville.
He’s been a pretty good guy … so far,” his son, Harvey Lee Futrell Jr. said with a laugh.
A pretty good guy who enjoys talking about his wife who died in 2004 after 72 years of marriage.
“I had a good wife,” Futrell said.
“They got married by the justice of the peace in Trenton,” Futrell said.
As for who wore the pants in Futrell’s relationship with his wife, Futrell recalled a conversation he had with his then fiance right before they got married.
“Me and my wife never had any arguments, it’s called now fights,” Futrell said. “We never had an argument. Why? Because I wouldn’t stay in the house when she was mad.
He told his then fiance “‘Any time you want my pants, let me know.’ You know what that means? Any time you want to take over, you take over and have my pants, too. She never asked for me for my pants.”
Futrell was surrounded Thursday at the birthday celebration by a family marked by his legacy.
“He has been a hard worker,” Futrell said. “He has worked a lot. He’s a little stubborn, too.”
“I don’t care if I live to be 110 as long as I have some conditions in there, but God don’t do that, as long as I can wait on myself,” Futrell said.
