WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s the Coast Guard’s birthday, and one Wilmington woman has a special way of celebrating. The coast guard turned 223 today.
Sue Hammonds says she has been following the coast guard and their boats since she was a little girl. Now, she collects photos of Coast Guard boats, and takes pictures of the boats as they stop in Wilmington. She also collects newspaper clippings about the Coast Guard, and sometimes sketches pictures of the boats.
“I just wanted to keep this alive, because it was very important to my father, and he was in the Coast Guard,” Hammonds said.
Hammonds says it is important to save these photos and clippings to educate and inspire future generations.
